Pininfarina | 3-Day Workshop

By: Clark Cheng, Oscar Owenson, and Ryan Leung

In July 2023, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Pininfarina workshop, an internationally renowned design house that has been a symbol of Italian style for nearly 90 years. This three-day workshop was an eye-opening experience, where we delved into the world of automotive design. The primary objective was to create car designs that embody the concept of airflow, an essential element in car aerodynamics. To achieve this, we utilized a combination of cutting-edge software tools, including Houdini for simulating airflow, Blender for crafting the car's base geometry, and Unreal Engine 5 for rendering and special effects. These three days were an intensive exploration of the intersection between art and technology, giving us a unique insight into the design and engineering of high-performance vehicles.

Pininfarina's rich history and reputation as a flexible partner with a strong commitment to values like purity, elegance, and innovation made this workshop even more inspiring. The collaboration between Pininfarina's architecture department and our Masters Y22/23 students was a testament to their willingness to share their expertise and knowledge with the next generation of designers. Each student group was paired with an industry professional from Pininfarina, providing invaluable guidance and mentorship throughout the workshop. This close interaction allowed us to push the boundaries of our creative thinking and gain insights into the practical challenges faced in the world of automotive design.

Overall, the Pininfarina workshop was a unique and enriching experience that broadened our horizons and allowed us to appreciate the intricacies of car design in a whole new light. It served as a vivid example of the exciting possibilities that emerge when design, technology, and innovation converge in the pursuit of excellence. As we presented our final projects at the end of the workshop, we were not only showcasing our creative talents but also paying homage to the legacy of Pininfarina and their dedication to the art of Italian design.
