Shifting Elastically

By Clark Cheng and Qile Ding

Shifting Elastically aims to provide housing and experiential communal spaces in order to give a sense of community not only to the complex but to the overall surrounding neighbors that reside in Detroit.

Sited along Kercheval Ave. and Townsend Street, we took advantage of the high volume of vehicular traffic as a method of exposing the housing units alongside the streets. This easily employed experiential qualities to the communal spaces that are provided - such as the tensile structures for a pleasant daytime glow, while also providing shelter.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Gradient Massing Diagram

The project started out with a program massing to understand the volume of space and how the housing units will be arranged.

The site plan has been labeled with the same dimensions to give a better understanding and scale of our project. The diagrams above explain the spatial logic and overall organization of the site.
